Cyclocalendar heroes the Tour de France. In a series of articles we focus on the stage cities and the gran fondo's and sportives of thee region. Today: stage 19, which starts from Bourg-en-Bresse.
Cycling around Bourg-en-Bresse
Bourg-en-Bresse (40.000 inhabitants) is mainly known for the poultry farms in the area. The white breeder chicken (Poule de Bresse) is world famous. As the map nicely shows, Bourg-en-Bresse lies exactly between the Massif Central in the west and the Jura in the east. The immediate vicinity is therefore fairly flat. The city itself is not very special. There are no major attractions. If you want to discover the Jura, Bourg-en-Bresse is not a good base. The serious climbs are too far away.
Close to Bourg-en-Bresse,s La Bisou is organized. A medium sized gran fondo (approx. 1000 participants) with two routes, of which the longest counts 141 km. In this cycle just under 2000 meters of elevation are collected. La Bisou has been chosen by Le Cycle as one of the 50 most beautiful gran fondo's in the world. Not surprisingly, the route leads to the northeast, into the Jura. It's anArdennes-like course, with 10 hills of which the highest is 560m. This event took place at the beginning of September this year because of corona. The usual time, however, is early April. A great GF for a hit-and-run, because Bourg-en-Bresse is easy to drive. Last minute registration is recommended though, because the weather can be terrible in the Jura.
Tomorrow we'll be back with another region where it rains a lot: the Vosges.Related stories
